Coyote Bush is a dense, rather billowy, bright green mat. It is generally 8 to 24 inches high and spreads up to 6 feet or more. It has small, 1/2 inch toothed leaves that are closely set on many branches. Coyote Bush is native to the California coast and the Sonoma to Monterey counties. It has remarkable climate and soil adaptation. If it is near the coast, it thrives with no water at all; however, if it is inland, it looks better with monthly watering. In California’s high desert, it is the most dependable bank and flatland cover for low-maintenance areas in the sun. Coyote Bush requires cutting, once a year, in early spring, before the new growth starts. You must cut out old arching branches, and thin them out, in order to rejuvenate the bush. Feed with a nitrogen fertilizer immediately after cutting.
